HIGHLIGHTS

    This qualification will promote the learner’s understanding of children (birth to 5 years) and will focus on:
    • holistic child development
    • factors that influence a child’s development
    • care routines and activities to support a child
    • regulation, policies and procedures in the early years
    • expectations of an early years practitioner
    • roles and responsibilities within early years settings
    • the importance of observations in early years childcare
    • the purpose of planning in early years childcare

Course Content

This qualification aims to:
• focus on the study of child development and care in the early years
• offer breadth and depth of study, incorporating a key core of knowledge
• provide opportunities to acquire a number of practical and technical skills

There are no specific prior skills/knowledge a learner must have for this qualification.
Registration is at the discretion of the centre, in accordance with equality legislation, and should be
made on the Portal.

Depending on the grade the learner achieves in this qualification, they could progress to level 2 and level
3 qualifications and/or GCSE/A Levels/T Levels.
Learners who achieve at level 1 might consider progression to level 2 qualifications post-16, such as:
• GCSE:
o Health and Social Care
o Childcare
• study at level 2 in a range of technical routes that have been designed for progression to
employment, apprenticeships, and further study (for example, Level 2 Technical Certificate in Health
and Social Care)

Learners could also progress onto an apprenticeship. The understanding and skills gained through this qualification could be useful to progress onto an apprenticeship in the early years sector through various occupations available within the sector, such as early years practitioners, early years educators and teaching assistants.
